Using 'R'

Undoubtedly, the program 'R' is the area that I have struggled with the most in this unit. I would consider myself to have a strong analytical mind, in fact statistics form a large part of my interests.
The technological component is what I struggle with most. I came across an exercise whilst analysing another part of the unit - ethical issues.

Being a visual learner, seeing the information that can be analysed and how it is displayed was a good starting point for discovering the program

Being able to illustrate the data in different ways was a good beginning to the next component of Sport Informatics and Analytics to consider: "Visualising Data".
The other way for me to initially understand what 'R' is and how to use it was to research its origins.
R provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modelling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering, …) and graphical techniques, and is highly extensible. The S language is often the vehicle of choice for research in statistical methodology, and R provides an Open Source route to participation in that activity. {sourced from - https://www.r-project.org/about.html}.
A useful tool for gaining further understanding came through the E-Portfolio activity on the Wiki-Educator site. Being able to review AFL data was of interest to me as it is one of my favourite sports.
It was an eye-opening experience as it truly highlighted the quantity of data that needed to be properly digested in order to be able to visualise it in an appropriate manner. Don't believe me? Check this out!!
Here's a screenshot of what I was looking at when creating an understanding:

I am looking forward to continuing my relationship with 'R over the coming years and incorporating this knowledge in to being able to analyse data on a new level.
