Bringing It All Together

Finals

The final chapter - Over this semester I have reviewed all things Informatics and Analytics. Several sub-areas of research have been conducted all of which link back to the primary themes of the unit:

  • Introductions

  • Pattern Recognition

  • Performance Monitoring

  • Audiences and Messages

Being able to critically examine the analytical side of sport was something that I thoroughly enjoyed given a background of high-level interest in statistics and patterns within sport. The major drawcard of this unit was the ability to visualise what applying this content in a High Performance sporting context would look like. Please enjoy taking in my perspectives on the final topics covered in this unit!

Wrapping it up

Communities of Practice

Theme 1

Bill Johnston (2013) outlined the characteristics of thriving online communities. These include:

  • Shared value (answers, content, connection, expertise and access)

  • Shared identity (to form and shape the community)

  • Vibrant participation (presence, contribution and facilitation)

  • Community leadership (clarity about roles and responsibilities)

  • Quality content (creation, aggregation and curation)

  • Expertise (community learns from leaders within the community)

  • Culture of trust (community is connected and able to share openly)

  • Elegant experience (easy to contribute and participate)

  • Growth and responsiveness (continuing inclusion of members and engagement with the governance of the community)

Knowledge Discovery

Theme 2

There have been a variety of labels used to characterise processes that extract of useful information from data. Examples include:

  • Data Mining

  • Knowledge Extraction

  • Information Discovery/Harvesting

  • Data archaeology

  • Data Pattern Processing

Feedforward

Theme 4

The second, slightly more in-depth look in to this concept. The notion that "learning from oneself" encounters several teaching flaws if focus is centred entirely around feedback. I will conduct a comparison exercise in to just how Feedforward differs from the much more broadly known concept of Feedback.

Informatics and Analytics

Themes 1, 2, 3 and 4

A tidy conclusion to the unit. Reflection and applied knowledge will be put to the test when finding out just how my progress has compared to the expected outcomes of the course!
